Mendoza

There are lots of ways to describe San Rafael but the one I like most is “perfect!” Geographically it’s located in the South of the Mendoza province some 230 km’s away from the provincial Capital city of Mendoza. The city nestles between the Rio Atuel and Rio Diamante and has the Andes Mountains as its backdrop. Leaving my house in the morning the first thing I always look for are the mountains! Less than 35 km’s away to the South you come to Valle Grande, a mini grand canyon that becomes the centre of tourist activity in the summer. The river over millions of years has carved a fantastic pathway through the rock structure to leave strata and formations of incredible beauty. Whether you want to go rafting, kayaking, climbing, trekking, hiking or paragliding Valle Grande has it all, not to mention a very busy night life! In winter the river slows and the area becomes far more serene. It’s always a pleasure every trip! At the top of Valle Grande lies El Nuhuil. A vast lake, home to flamingo, swans, all sorts of birdlife and me occasionally on a windsurfer! Close by and you can moto cross over huge sand dunes, or just relax on the beach along with everyone else! Excellent fishing can be had at Los Reyunos another beautiful lake on the Rio Diamante along with stunning views and all available water sports.

Back into town and there’s a plethora of wineries to visit and get a first hand taste of Mendoza’s fantastic wines. The beautiful Bianchi winery lies close to one of San Rafael’s golf courses and also very near to the autodrome which draws huge crowds on race days. In town itself you’ll be surprised by how cosmopolitan it is. Shops range from small kiosks to large and very fashionable clothes shops be prepared to meet some very stylish and attractive people! And the steaks….did I mention the steaks! There aren’t many places left in the world where 2 people can have a three course meal with the tenderest most perfect steak, enjoyed alongside a world class bottle of red wine for less than U$S 20.00.

Then there’s Las Lenas, world class skiing 2 hours drive away at a fraction of European and American prices. You not only get to see the Andes, but Ski the Andes to, although my bags snowboarding!

I could go on, but then it’s better for you to find out yourself! You’ll see that perfect isn’t too far off the mark!!
